We show that the color indices of a group of 26 op- tical afterglows (OAs) of gamma-ray bursts (GRB) display only small variations during the decline of brightness for t - T0 < 10 days. The colors in the observer frame concentrate at (V - R)0 = 0.42 ± 0.11 mag, (R - I)0 = 0.47 ± 0.15 mag, (B - V )0 = 0.45 ± 0.16 mag despite various redshifts, but are scattered in (U - B)0. We are confirming and re- inforcing what we already proved in ˇSimon et al. (2001), but now with much better statistics, that is 26 events, while before we had only 17 OAs. More- over, we show that the color indices also can help to resolve the synchrotron component from the con- tribution of the supernova (SN), e.g. in the OA of GRB030329 for t-T0 > 12 days, and to discriminate between various types of SN or put constraints on the type and light contribution of SN. This is especially important for faint OAs for which obtaining spec- tra with a high S/N ratio is often impossible. We also demonstrate the large impact of color indices on the analysis of the environment of GRB in their host galaxies. A strong concentration of color indices of these 26 OAs suggests that their local reddening (i.e. inside their host galaxies) must be quite similar and relatively small hence they are not deep inside the star-forming regions or, alternatively, the dust is largely destroyed by the initial energetic flash. Key words: Gamma rays: bursts; Radiation mecha- nisms: non-thermal; ISM: jets and outflows; Galax- ies: ISM; supernovae: general; supernovae: individ- ual: SN 2003dh.
