The linear prediction filtering technique was applied to model the magnetospheric response by using high time resolution ISEE 3 solar wind data and the geomagnetic AL, AU and Dst indices. It was found that the computed impulse response functions have the characteristics of a low pass filter with time delays which depend on the strength of the energy input. While the AL index is reasonably well related to the solar wind parameter V Bs, the AU index shows a sustantially poorer relationship. The more sensitive technique of multichannel filtering allows a better look into the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling. However, the most predictable geomagnetic index is the ring current index Dst.
