Black Holes: String Theory
Scientific paper
The aim of these lectures is to present some selected topics in the area of string theory, in particular those where string theory should provide answers where standard quantum field theory and general relativity seem to be in conflict. The first part of the lectures reviews some aspects of black hole physics, and in particular the many puzzles raised by Hawking when one studies quantized matter in the present of such space-time. Then the authors survey some of the current ideas, especially those inspired in string theory, which provide new scenarios, where some of these problems can be addressed. These include two-dimensional dilaton black holes and string black holes. Finally they briefly introduce some discrete symmetries (duality and mirror transformations) appearing in string theory and which have no analogue in quantum field theory.
