Novel instrumental approaches are considered with a view to the coupling of the Mercury radiation environment with its surface, via the intermediate magnetosphere. Attention is given to the neutral atom imager; different kinetic energies obtainable by such an instrument are able to yield information on different coupling processes and on global energy inputs to the system.
