The Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) is a powerful tool for the analysis of Martian atmospheric aerosol content. This paper illustrates the capabilities of the IMP for this purpose and discusses some of the measurements that can be performed. The optical depth (by day and by night), sky brightness, atmospheric water content, the solar aureole structure, icy haloes, and cloud measurements can all be investigated by the IMP. A discussion of nighttime optical depth measurements is presented. The potential synergism between IMP atmospheric measurements and imaging of atmospheric phenomena from an orbiter is also briefly described.
