Even before Mariner 10 provided closeup pictures of the surface of Venus, it had been established through optical observations and radar measurements that the surface of the planet was similar to that of the moon, that the density of the planet was similar to that of the earth, and that the planet was in 3:2 bound rotation with the sun. Calculations indicate that Mercury has a heavy metallic core, probably consisting of iron and silicates of iron and magnesium. Mercury has a dipole magnetic field about 1% the strength of the earth's. Closeup photographs of Mercury's surface reveal three landscape features: crater land, mildly impacted areas, and intercrater areas. Noteworthy is the Caloris Basin, which is similar to the Mare Imbrium of the moon, with a diameter of 1300 km and mountain edge 2 km in height. Mariner has also revealed a thin atmosphere on Mercury, with typical pressure on the surface of 0.1 billionths of a millibar.
