The objective of the Venera 11 and 12 lander experiments was threefold: (1) to perform precise chemical analysis of the gases in the Venusian atmosphere; (2) ascertain the nature of the clouds; and (3) to establish the heat balance of the atmosphere. The discussion covers the chemical and isotopic composition of the Venusian atmosphere by mass spectroscopy, chemical composition of the atmosphere by gas chromatography, scattering and absorption of sunlight by spectrophotometry, aerosol component of the atmosphere, a thunderstorm experiment, UV scattering in the upper atmosphere of Venus (flyby experiments), and aerosol particles in the cloud layer. Important results are reported, including the one that chlorine is among the aerosol constituents
