A summary is provided of data on mineral and sea salt aerosol samples collected aboard two vessels, the D/V Glomar Challenger and S/S Universe Campus. The samples were collected in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans during the last few years using quantitative sampling techniques. Attention is given to mineral aerosol concentrations, mineral aerosol flux to the ocean, and the range of mean sea salt aerosol concentrations. It is found that mineral aerosol is a highly variable constituent in the marine atmosphere. The temporal and geographical variability is best documented for the tropical North Atlantic where the concentration of mineral dust can change by a factor of ten to a hundred from day to day and from season to season.
