An unexpected feature in the spectrum of a twilight release of trimethylaluminium at 160 km altitude is identified as being due to CH(+) formed following the release. All other spectroscopic possibilities are eliminated. Its formation at the rate observed can not be explained by any known sequence of exothermic reactions. It also disappears in several seconds but this can be accounted for by dissociative recombination or by reactions with ambient atomic oxygen. The maximum yield of ions is estimated to be about 4% of the AlO yield.
