The assumption of a continuous mass distribution is incorporated into Field and Saslaw's (1965) theory concerning the formation of primeval protocluster interstellar-cloud stars. A model of a fragment cluster is analyzed on the assumption that the impact cross section is time dependent through free-fall collapse. The calculations retain the condition that coalescence into a massive cloud is due to binary collisions, with the space occupied by the fragments being negligible in comparison with the volume occupied by the large primeval isothermal cloud. The mass-spectrum profiles of several young open clusters are compared with the computed models. The results of the calculations are also compared with the theoretical mass function deduced by Reddish (1965) from considerations of the equipartition of gravitational potential energy among the fragments.
