Polarization measurements are analyzed for 73 southern and 99 northern stars at distances greater than 1 kpc from the sun and for 41 southern and 42 northern stars at distances less than 1 kpc. It is shown that the previously reported variation in the wavelength of maximum polarization with galactic longitude is a local phenomenon produced by polarizing grains within about 500 pc of the sun. The observed distribution of stars with wavelengths of maximum polarization of 0.58 micron or longer is taken as a strong suggestion of an association of this phenomenon with Gould's Belt. Implications of the results for interstellar element abundances are considered.
