An attempt is made to test the cavity mode concept proposed by Crowley et al. (1987) by using the numerical time-dependent model of hydromagnetic wave coupling in a cylindrical magnetospheric geometry with parameters chosen to simulate the observed situation. By applying a numerical model of MHD coupling in the magnetosphere and choosing parameters to simulate the event, ground magnetic series are derived which are similar to the observed series, provided the plasma mass density gradient in the equatorial plane is relatively small. This is considered to be good supporting evidence for for a cavity mode drive. The results also demonstrate the structure of a highly dampled field line resonance driven by a compressional cavity mode.
