Scientific paper

Assuming the earth's magnetopause to be a one-dimensional tangential discontinuity, the transport of energy and momentum on both sides of the magnetopause caused by unstable compressional Kelvin-Helmholtz waves are investigated. The calculations show that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability can play an important role in the coupling processes between the solar wind and the magnetosphere.
