Plasma and energetic particle measurements during five plasma sheet crossings of the ISEE I satellite in March/April 1978 are presented. Energetic protons extending in energy up to at least 0.5 MeV and energetic electrons up to at least 0.3 MeV are observed inside the plasma sheet. The intensity time profile of protons with energies up to about 150 keV closely follows the time profile of the proton temperature of the thermal plasma sheet population. Protons at about 0.4 MeV exhibit a typical fast rise - slow decay profile; the decay time constant decreases with increasing energy. Energetic electrons generally do not follow the energetic proton profile. The electron intensity reaches its maximum intensity about 30 min after the appearance of the plasma sheet as determined by the thermal electrons. After reaching their maximum intensity, the electrons closely follow changes in the electron temperature of the thermal particles.
