The propagation of a hydromagnetic fast shock in a gravitational atmosphere permeated by a uniform magnetic field is studied by means of generalized Chisnell's method. It is shown that the fast shock propagating upwards always refracts away from the vertical irrespective of the direction of the magnetic field and the degree of refraction is higher when the ratio of the sound velocity to the Alfvén velocity along the magnetic field is smaller than unity. It is also shown that slow waves travelling upwards and downwards are generated in the fast-shock propagation through the atmosphere of declining density. The relation between these results and the heating of the solar corona is discussed.
