We propose to use the CTIO 4-m telescope and Hydra spectrograph to obtain simultaneous spectra of globular cluster candidates in six galaxies of the Sculptor Group: NGC 45, NGC 55, NGC 247, NGC 253, NGC 300, and NGC 7793. Each galaxy contains 50-100 candidate clusters identified from Mosaic II images; we expect ~50% of the candidates are true clusters while the remainder are background galaxies. Our sample triples the number of galaxies similar in luminosity to the LMC and M33 that have been systematically surveyed for globular clusters. With 1Å/pixel dispersion over the range 3500-6350Å, we will clearly distinguish old and young clusters from contaminating galaxies and obtain kinematics with 20 km/s accuracy per cluster. Combined with existing CMR photometry, we will also use the spectra to measure abundances and ages. From the age and abundance distributions, we will help to establish whether low-mass galaxies experienced the common epoch of globular cluster formation and determine whether it is likely that LMC-like galaxies could have contributed to the formation of the Milky Way halo. From the kinematics of the old clusters, we will observe how the globular cluster systems in these galaxies formed: whether in a disk, like the LMC, or in a halo, like M33. Did disks actually precede the formation of halos in these galaxies?
