A small but increasing number of very massive stars are now known to have undergone spectacular outbursts similar to η Car's famous giant eruption. Several objects previously considered to be supernovae are likely members of this class. The detection of remnant stars or survivors of two of these former SNe, SN1961v in N1058 and V12 (SN1954j) in N2403 is now considered additional evidence that these were η Car - like eruptions and not true SNe. However, the detection of an image at the site is not sufficient to confirm that the star survived its η Car or SNe - like eruption. We propose to obtain low to moderate resolution spectra of these objects using the `new MMT'. We will also obtain blue and red spectra of related highly unstable stars including the enigmatic object Var A in M33 and the Hubble-Sandage variables (or LBV's) in M31 and M33.
