The current debate over the origin of the low-redshift Lyα absorption lines seen in QSO spectra observed with HST centers on whether individual galaxies are responsible for the absorption or whether the absorbers are related to galaxies only through their common association with large-scale filaments. Accepting this latter interpretation raises question about the origin of metal-absorption lines, which had hitherto been thought to be directly associated with galaxies. With this proposal we seek to revisit the origin of the Mg II absorbers by first finding bright galaxies within 40 h of QSO sightlines, then searching for Mg II absorption in the QSO spectrum. This is the converse of the experiments performed a decade ago by several authors. We aim to establish whether all galaxies show Mg II absorption within 40 h , and thereby strengthen or weaken the evidence for extended, isolated gaseous halos. The availability of moderately deep, all-sky CCD images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, along with large aperture telescopes such as Gemini and the HET, finally makes such a project feasible with a moderate allocation of telescope time.
