We report the results of a 6 and 20 cm, high-resolution VLA survey of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946. The goal of this survey is to identify compact radio sources. The three main types of radio sources are supernova remnants (SNRs), HII regions, and background objects. Radio observations of SNRs and HII regions are important to furthering the understanding of the evolution of galaxies. SNRs are involved in cosmic ray production, shock physics and the acceleration of particles, and interactions with the ISM. HII regions are sites of star formation and interactions between stars and the ISM. Radio studies of HII regions have the advantage that the radio emission is immune to extinction by dust and can yield unambiguous ionizing fluxes of the stars exciting the HII regions. We report the detection of over 100 radio sources in NGC 6946. The spectral index distribution is discussed. The correlation between the radio sources and Hα emission is presented. Comparisons are made between the radio and optical source populations of this galaxy.
