Because resonant perturbations from a protoplanet interior to a planetesimal's orbit can counteract both orbital decay and eccentricity damping, the planetesimal can undergo capture in an orbital resonance and its eccentricity can be enhanced to a modestly high equilibrium value. The characteristics of the phenomenon of resonance capture by gas drag are here established in the circular restricted three-body approximation, leading to determinations of the strengths of the equilibrium resonant orbits relative to impulse velocity perturbations.
