We analyse the consequences of the singular (at zero viscosity) nature of inertial modes in a spherical shell for the dynamics of the Earth's liquid core on the time scale of a day. We show that the singularities, essentially appearing as internal shear layers, although increasing the damping rates of the modes, cannot be invoked to rule out the possible role of the elliptical instability in the geodynamo. We also show that the search for core modes in the spectrum of oscillations of the Earth should be guided by the Lyapunov exponents associated with the maps built up by characteristics propagating in the shell.
