In the present paper, the kinetics of xenon excitation and ionization and the kinetics of electron-gas heating are analyzed for Mach numbers ranging from 14 to 20 and an initial pressure of 5 torr in the region in front of the shock wave. The analysis shows that the kinetics of ionization of xenon atoms differs qualitatively from that of argon and mercury-vapor ionization. Also, photoionization and associative ionization must be taken into consideration; with increasing intensity of the incident shock wave, the photoionization processes become the determining factor in the production of charged particles.
