Black Hole Physics, Hydrodynamics

Scientific paper

We have computed encounters of stars with a massive black hole using a three-dimensional Eulerian hydrodynamic code. The stars are assumed to be polytropes with indices n = 1.5, 2, and 3, and the adiabatic index γ is taken to be 5/3. In this paper encounters which do not lead to stripping or disruption of the star are considered. Nonlinear effects and the transfer of energy and angular momentum are discussed, and the results are compared with the predictions of the linear theory.
