Current models of coronal mass ejections are reviewed, including the propagation of loops as a result of azimuthal field gradients, ring currents, or a buildup of magnetic pressure from below. MHD codes intended to simulate transient conditions are also considered. Metric radio observations which in principle can distinguish the relative role of the magnetic field in the ejection process are surveyed. It is found that at present there is no compelling evidence to distinguish between transient driving mechanisms, but that future observations of the corona and interplanetary medium may resolve the present ambiguity.
