Planetary nebulas (PNs) are discussed as examples of late star evolution, emphasizing studies of the central stars. The difficulties involved in studying these stars are reviewed, and the determination of the effective temperature and luminosity of the stars is discussed in the context of the H-R diagram. Knowledge of the PN diameter and the velocity of expansion provides a time scale for studying stellar development.
