Scientific paper
Methods for predicting the secular variation of geomagnetic field components are tested by applying them to data for a single component at a single station at Greenwich, England. Consideration is given to global schemes, local schemes, and the expansion of spherical harmonic coefficients as Taylor series. It is shown that no single method is adequate for estimating secular variations for more than a few years.
