The current database and models for the physical characteristics of the Great Red Spot (GRS) of Jupiter are summarized. Discovered in 1664, the GRS was for centuries studied only with ground-based telescopes, until the more recent availability of Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft data. The GRS has been shrinking 100 km per year in radius for over 40 yr. Turning anticyclonally, the GRS east and west edges move at 430 km/h, the north and south edges at 100 km/h. IR scans of the phenomenon have shown that the border is considerably warmer than the interior. No firm identification has been made of the elemental composition which produces the red color. Also, no model for the GRS has been defined which would satisfy the hydrodynamic equations which would be needed. Further data are required on the energy source driving the observed motions and the types of clouds, in the Jovian stratosphere, which cannot be viewed at visible wavelengths.
