The six second-order derivatives of the gravitational potential yielded by an orbiting gradiometer contain information on the orbit, the structure of the gravity field, and the attitude of the spacecraft. This makes possible the separation of orbit determination from attitude or gravity field recovery, facilitates gradiometer measurement analysis, and allows the use of fast spherical harmonic analysis. The separation of gravity field recovery and orbit determination is presently tested numerically with a simplified gravity field up to degree 300; an almost exact recovery is attained after two iteration steps for both the potential coefficients and the orbit.
