Results are presented for a study in which the flowing afterglow technique was used to measure rate constants at room temperature for the aeronomically important reactions of O2(+) with N and of NO(+).H2O and NO2(+) with O. It is found that the reaction O2(+) + N yields NO(+) + O has a rate constant of about 1.2 by 10 to the -10th power cu cm/s, that the rate constant for the reaction NO(+).H2O + O yields NO2(+) + H2O is less than 10 to the -11th power cu cm/s, and that the reaction between NO2(+) and O yielding NO(+) and O2 has a rate constant of less than 8 by 10 to the -12th power cu cm/s. The last value is also shown to apply to the reaction NO2(+) + N yields NO(+) + NO. It is concluded that NO2(+) production may promote the formation of water-vapor cluster ions provided reactions such as that between NO2(+) and O are slow.
