A negative correlation is found between the E-region virtual height and the derivation of the horizontal magnetic intensity from its midnight value at Huancayo. The correlation disappears near 10 h LT in all seasons and is totally absent in J months. There is also a statistical increase in the E-region virtual height during equatorial electrojet reversals. Various mechanisms which might give rise to the correlation are reviewed. E-region electron density profiles at Huancayo during reverse equatorial electrojets are found to move to greater altitudes and lower densities, resulting in reduced Hall conductivities. It is suggested that these effects are due to a semidiurnal tide subject to mesospheric control.
