The effects of traveling ionospheric disturbances on ionograms are studied, and a no-field ionogram synthesis technique is proposed to avoid the wastage of ray-tracings. The technique is applied firstly to a bottomside ionosphere model of a moving tilted ionization increase or 'blob' and then to a model of a similar ionization decrease or trough. The calculated sets of ionograms exhibit abnormal cusps, loops, and multiple traces. The topside case of a moving quasi-sinusoidal disturbance in an exponential layer is also analyzed. In all three cases the effects on ionogram scaling and reduction are considered.
