The cameras for the HESS atmospheric Cherenkov detector (described in a companion paper) use fast electronics and a sophisticated trigger situated just behind the focal plane comprised of 960 PMs (0.16° pixel size, 5° field of view), from which the digitized information is sent via the on-board acquisition system to the central data collection farm. The ensemble of the camera characteristics (electronics, mechanics, Winston cones, local acquisition system) is described, and the tests performed are detailed. The installation of the first such camera takes place this autumn.
