We propose to image three fields in the M31 disk with Gemini North, NIRI+Altair, and JHK filters, for the purpose of measuring the star formation history of the M31 disk. Our previous Altair observations of M31 AGB and RGB stars have shown that both the bulge and disk of M31 are dominated by populations older than 6 Gyr. While we expected to discover that the bulge was old, we did not expect to find almost identical populations in the disk. The much deeper observations of three M31 disk fields proposed here will reach the level of the horizontal branch, producing up to a factor three higher age and metallicity resolution and a more certain foundation for the derivation of the star formation history of M31's disk. We expect that these observations will form a milestone by which we may judge the success of simulations designed to investigate disk galaxy formation.
