After describing the history of the discovery of HE 0107 5240, I report on some recent results on this star, including a new determination of its iron abundance based on the detection of an Fe II line in an ultraviolet spectrum taken with the Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph. An iron abundance of [Fe/H]=-5.7 was derived. I briefly review the ongoing discussion about the origin of the abundance pattern of HE 0107 5240 and the second currently known hyper metal-poor star, HE 1327 2326 ([Fe/H]=- 5.9). I conclude with an outlook on future wide-angle surveys for metal-poor stars.
