It is shown that magnetic observations in the vicinity or on the surface of the planets and satellites of the solar system constitute an important source of information on the interiors, ionospheres and magnetospheres of these bodies. Application of the techniques of geomagnetism has yielded important results on the earth. These techniques and the results on the interior of the earth are discussed briefly. The great scientific potential of magnetic exploration of the planetary system is illustrated by three examples: The general magnetic fields of Jupiter and Saturn, the Jovian satellite Io and the magnetosphere, ionosphere and interior of Mars.
