To simplify calculations of radiation transfer in upper planetary atmospheres, it is useful to know when the limiting cases of the Voigt line profiles, the Lorentz and Doppler cases, can be applied. The present paper gives the regions of applicability of the three profiles for a derived equivalent linewidth with respect to the lower-level coordinate, while the upper level corresponds to the upper bound of the atmosphere with zero pressure. The effect of pressure on the shape of the line profile along the optical path is taken into account.
