Theoretical relations between fluctuations of airglow brightness, fluctuations of temperature (as revealed by airglow), and the atmospheric gravity waves which are thought to cause these fluctuations are presented. The need for a nonlinear treatment of O2(1Sigma sub g) emissions suggested by Weinstock (1978) is repudiated. A dependence of temperature and brightness fluctuations on variable gravity-wave parameters is found which is applicable to the relating of gravity waves to airglow. The present analysis can account for certain observations of OH and O2(1Sigma sub g) emissions that have not yet been adequately explained, and it stresses the importance of correct measurement of parameters including wave frequency and propagation speed in the study of gravity waves.
