Vela passes across the boundary layer in the magnetotail were analyzed in order to describe the relative characteristics of energetic electrons in the plasma sheet, high-latitude tail (lobe), boundary layer, and magnetosheath regimes. Three-dimensional distributions of intensity of energetic electron populations (larger than approximately 28 keV) were examined to distinguish open field lines (significant unidirectional anisotropy) and closed field lines (significant bidirectional anisotropy). The data support the hypothesis that closed boundary layer flux tubes are swept from the subsolar surface of the magnetosphere along its flanks and into the tail, and that the plasma sheet is generated at least in part by the incorporation of these closed flux tubes into the tail. It is suggested that energetic electrons observed in the magnetosheath originate from magnetospheric populations which escape from closed field lines in a corridor between x approximately equal to -10 earth radii in the plasma sheet and the nose of the magnetosphere.
