Velocity-density systematic relations combined with lunar seismic and density models are used to derive mean atomic weight profiles for the lunar mantle which may be used to infer the gross composition of the lunar interior. Bulk sound velocity, density and Poisson's ratio are specified from lunar seismic and density profiles and used with both power-law and linear formulations of velocity-density systematics to obtain the mean atomic weight as a function of depth. When the linear systematics including Poisson's ratio is used, values from 22.3 to 23.1 g/mol are obtained for the mean atomic weight below 150 km. The values are significantly higher than similar value calculated for the earth, indicating the unlikelihood of the direct production of the moon from the earth's mantle. The present profiles are also observed to be 0.5 to 3.0 g/mol higher than those calculated from lunar compositional models based on lunar rock compositions and petrology, and on assumed lunar histories, suggesting that either the seismic or the compositional models, or both, are inadequate.
