It is shown that empirical models of the quiet ionosphere can be improved by incorporating the dependence of ionospheric parameters on levels of magnetic disturbance. The model examined is the International Reference Ionosphere 1978 (Rawer et al., 1978), in which the vertical electron density profile is approximated by a Chapman function with a variable height scale, while the parameters of the layer maximum are determined as a function of solar activity, season, latitude, longitude, time of day, and magnetic inclination.
