The authors review the available data and analyze recent measurements from Aureole-3 (the ARCAD-3 project). Based on these, they consider the relations between the auroral oval and bands of diffuse luminescence equatorward and poleward of it, and the plasma domains of the inner magnetosphere and its tail. They provide proof that the auroral oval is projected at the main, or central, part of the plasma sheet and not at the boundary part of the plasma sheet, as has been assumed in many papers.
