In the last few years, there have been several significant developments in the field of ultra-compact white dwarf binaries as new sources have been discovered and detailed multi-wavelength studies have revealed crucial insights into the properties of these binaries. Their extremely short periods and significant mass transfer rates make them excellent targets for a wide range of facilities ranging from the high-energy end to graviational waves. I discuss recent results from our team that is shedding new light on the properties of the binaries. These include XMM-Newton observations, detailed phase-resolved ground-based spectroscopy that allows us to pinpoint system parameters and distance estimates from HST. Finally I will discuss adaptive optics imaging and detailed integral field spectroscopy of the first helium-nova V445 Puppis.
