We propose to carry out a NH3 unbiased survey of Lupus 1 and 3 molecular clouds. Ammonia is one of the best molecules for studing the dense molecular cores where stars form and it allows to trace the distribution of the cores and to derive key physical parameters of the gas such as the temperature. Moreover, in the 8 GHz band also CCS and HC3N will be observed. These molecules give a complementary view of the chemical evolution of the cloud: carbon chain molecules are considered early-time species whereas NH3 is a late-time specie. Therefore the proposed observations will allow to detect dense cores in different evolutionary stage: from starless cores to cores on the verge of forming stars, permitting to get insight into the origin of the Initial Mass Function. The selected regions will be mapped in six photometric bands by the Herschel satellite, which will provide spectral energy distributions of the dust emission. The synergy between Mopra and Herschel allows an analysis of the pre-stellar and early star forming condensations both in their gas and dust components. The Mopra 22m antenna is unique for observations at 12mm of the close-by southern Lupus molecular clouds.
