The origin of the pits and grooves on the surface of Phobos visible on the Viking orbital images of Phobos is investigated using a model of the mechanism of venting and drainage of regolith into open fractures, which is the mechanism that is best supported by image data. In this model, drainage pits and fissures are modeled experimentally by considering two rigid substrate plates placed edge to edge and covered by uniform thicknesses of dry fragmental debris (simulated regolith); fracture extension is simulated by drawing the plates apart, allowing the regolith to drain into the newly created void. The resulting experimental patterns of pits and grooves were found to have pronounced similarities with those observed on Phobos, displaying many characteristics, such as the lack of raised rims, the linearity of grooves and chains of pits, a uniform spacing of pits, and the progression from discrete pits to cuspate grooves, which are the same as those observed on Phobos.
