The entry of solar wind particles into the earth's magnetosphere is examined. The total flux of solar wind particles across the dayside and tail 'open' magnetopause is estimated. A formula is obtained which relates the particle flux to the average plasma density and the total open flux at the magnetopause. Also, the particle flux through the closed part of the magnetopause is estimated for comparison. It is found that the flux of solar wind particles across the tail magnetopause is greater than that through the dayside magnetopause.
