Measurements of the neutral dynamics associated with thermospheric winds at high latitudes obtained at College, Alaska between March 1981 and January 1985 are used to study the effect of the change in sign of the IMF B(y) component on the auroral zone thermospheric temperature and wind. The two cases considered are 13 unambiguous nights where the sign of B(y) was constant during observations and 112 nights with an IMF selection criterion similar to that of Reiff et al. (1981). The wind and temperature averages for both cases show large variations with B(y) in the auroral zone.
