The composition and density and temperature distributions of the thermal ion population in the terrestrial plasmasphere under quiet geomagnetic conditions are studied using ICE data collected by the GEOS 1 satellite between June 1977 and May 1978. It is found that the typical quiet time proton densities vary between 100 and 2000/cu cm. Results are presented concerning the density and temperature of H(+) and He(+) ions, the recovery of the plasmasphere after geomagnetic storms, and the densities and temperatures of minor ions, such as oxygen and deuterium ions.
