The ratio of the antenna gain to the system noise temperature, G/T, determines the figure-of-merit of a satellite earth station. The requirements for direct measurement of G/T are outlined, and the relative merits of alternative radiation sources are briefly considered. Existing results of measurements of the lunar flux density over the full microwave range are reviewed with emphasis placed on the commercial satellite communication bands at 6/4 and 14/12 GHz. Problems involved in the use of these results in the measurement of G/T for satellite earth stations are then considered. The actual and potential accuracies of the lunar microwave brightness temperature measurements are discussed.
