The correct interpretation of observed variations in the O-C diagrams of eclipsing binaries is a long lasting problem. Different authors preferred different approaches and their conclusions were against each other several times but the applied data sets were the same. The problem was discussed recently in details at a conference putting into the focus the possible interpretations of O-C diagrams \citep{hegedus_chris05}.
In this short contribution we would like to emphasize that the shorter period cyclic variations can be identified in a reliable way applying Fourier techniques independently from any prior assumption referring to a reference orbital period.
