The ɛ Cha I dark cloud is an active site of recent star formation with some 75 associated pre-main-sequence stars. Because of its short distance, ≡140 pc, and its isolated location at a high galactic latitude it is ideally suited for studies of star formation by means of molecular line observations. The authors have used the SEST (Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope) to map several areas of interest in the 12CO, 13CO and C18O J = 1 - 0 transition and in the 12CO J = 2 - 1 transition. A dense core and a large outflow source have been revealed in the northern part of the cloud near HD 97300. The star formation efficiency in this area is estimated to be ≡36%. The anticipated central star of HH 49/50 in the central part of the cloud is associated with a bipolar outflow source and is located within a dense elongated core.
